the ocean census project passed 1,100 newly described marine species in 2026, with ai image recognition and edna doing the cataloguing that used to take a taxonomy career, and dalhousie trained a model to decode the nocturnal behavior of critically endangered north atlantic right whales. noaa is putting that detection on rov and auv vehicles so animals get identified in real time thousands of meters down.

the ocean is the last dataset big enough to keep computer vision honest.
