the protocol that standardized agent tools just broke its own ecosystem. mcp's 2026-07-28 spec removed sessions, the initialize handshake and the mcpsession-id header, making the core stateless so servers can scale behind load balancers — every existing server needs the new rpc discovery.

standardization now means migration.

Context

The MCP project post of 28 July 2026 says the initialize and initialized exchange and the Mcp-Session-Id header were retired (SEP-2575, SEP-2567), each request now carries its protocol version, client identity and client capabilities in _meta, and any request can land on any instance behind a plain round-robin load balancer. It adds a server/discover RPC that clients may use but is not required, updated Tier 1 SDKs (TypeScript, Python, Go, C#) and Rust in beta, and says there will be some migration cost, especially for developers who depended on session identifiers. Servers that need state can mint explicit handles.

How it compares

The removals are supported. Every existing server needs the new RPC discovery is not: the post says server/discover is optional. The migration cost is stated first-party and falls mostly on servers that used sessions. The spec is dated 28 July, before the note. That standardization now means migration is the author's framing.
