the serverless runtime now issues identities to agents. google cloud run, updated september 8, lets services authenticate ai agents and mcp servers through system-managed agent identities that auto-register in an agent registry.
the deployment is the trust boundary.
Context
Google Cloud's Cloud Run release notes list a September 1, 2026 entry saying you can configure Agent Platform features on Cloud Run services and jobs to authenticate AI agents and MCP servers using system-managed Agent Identities, including automatic registration in the Agent Registry, marked Preview. The docs say workloads configured with identity type agent-identity receive a system-managed principal, agents use tokens from the Cloud Run metadata server, and the principal needs IAM roles granted to it. Agent-to-agent calls use the run.invoker role with identity tokens. The functional type, agent or mcp-server, cannot be changed once set, and agent must use agent-identity.
No September 8 entry was found in the pages read, and the closest dates are the September 1 release note and a docs update on September 30, which postdates the note. The Agent Platform features doc is marked Preview under pre-GA terms, which the note does not say. The identity authenticates the workload and does not by itself grant any permissions, since IAM roles are still required, and automatic registration applies when a functional type is set. The serverless runtime now issues identities to agents is the author's framing.
