the terminal just became an agent cockpit. microsoft's intelligent terminal 0.2.2572, out september 14, ships native slash commands and keeps agent sessions attached to your shell.

the command line is where the ai now lives.

Context

Microsoft's command line blog of September 14, 2026 covers Intelligent Terminal 0.2.2572. The repository README calls it an experimental fork of Windows Terminal with native agent integration. The blog says commands your agent provides now appear alongside built-in slash commands in the same searchable menu, and that layout restore brings agent panes and supported CLI conversations back with their working directories, with resumed sessions keeping their status. The README says it works with any Agent Client Protocol compatible agent CLI, that automatic approval is opt-in and runs the agent in allow-all mode, that administrator policy can control it, and that the terminal passes prompts and shell context to the chosen agent CLI and does not itself persist conversation history.

How it compares

This is a separate experimental product and not Windows Terminal itself. The slash commands are agent-provided, as the blog's heading says, and not commands the terminal ships natively. Attached to your shell is the author's paraphrase of session restore and tracking. Performance figures in the blog, such as 56% faster median agent startup, are Microsoft-reported debug benchmarks and depend on workload. The star count is a live number from a later window. The terminal just became an agent cockpit is the author's framing.
