three repos hit trending this month and they are all arguing what a skill is. mattpocock/skills, obra/superpowers, affaan-m/ECC. each one defines the file format the agent reads. the harness is the runtime, the skill is the contract. whoever ships the contract first owns the next 12 months of agent tooling.
the vendors are racing a wiki.
Context
The mattpocock/skills repository was created on 3 February 2026 and showed 247,112 stars when read. The obra/superpowers repository showed 280,820, and affaan-m/ECC describes itself as the agent harness performance optimization system, with skills, instincts, memory, security and research-first development. Trendshift says mattpocock/skills first reached number 1 on 26 April 2026, and mer.vin says it was number 2 on the daily list on 6 September 2026. Augment Code, dated 23 March 2026, says ECC reached 100K stars in March.
The repository pages show they are skill and harness collections. Current star counts do not show that all three hit trending in September 2026: only mattpocock/skills is placed on a list that month, on 6 September 2026, and the other two are not established for September before the note. A trend report dated 12 September 2026 for superpowers is after the note. The README for mattpocock/skills says its skills work with any model, and the other two formats were not read to compare. That the three argue what a skill is, that whoever ships the contract owns the next 12 months, and that vendors are racing a wiki, are the author's opinion and prediction.
