your scraper just got a control plane. scrapy 2.19.0, out september 10, adds a remotecontrol extension that inspects a running crawl over http — the same hook its mcp server uses — and makes an aiohttp download handler the default.
the web crawler became something you drive from outside.
Context
Scrapy's release notes list Scrapy 2.19.0 on 2026-09-10. The highlights say a remote control extension allows inspecting and controlling a running crawl over HTTP, and is used by the Scrapy MCP server. The extension docs, added in version 2.19.0, say it is an HTTP server that can run Python code passed in HTTP requests, inside the Scrapy process with access to the Crawler. It listens on a random port on localhost, requires a Bearer token, writes the token and port to a job file in the user's profile directory, and exposes /status and /execute endpoints. It is enabled by default, can be disabled with REMOTE_CONTROL_ENABLED set to False, and requires asyncio support.
The note says inspects, but /execute runs Python inside the process, so it is control and not only inspection. The aiohttp download handler is called experimental in the notes and is the default only when running without a Twisted reactor, so the default claim is overstated for normal crawls. This is cited from docs, and no vulnerability or exploitation is inferred. The MCP server page was not read. The release also adds Python 3.15 support and new dependencies. The web crawler became something you drive from outside is the author's framing.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
